Animals related to the habitat of the whale shark This
shark species is considered "a key player in the structure and
dynamics of the coastal ecosystems that it frequents". What’s
more, it is known that other species related to whale sharks, due to
similar requirements in current conditions, temperature and feeding, are
present in whale shark aggregation sites Crustaceans, for
example lobster (Panulirus argus)
and local fish, like the sardine (Sardine
pilchardus), Atlantic bonito
(Sarda
sarda), Pacific sierra (Scomberomorus
sierra), tuna (Thunnus thynnus),
jack (Cranax sp), snapper (Lutjanus
sp), grouper (Epinephelus
itajara), support important fishing industries. Marine birds, among them those that nest at Isla Contoy National Park , frequent the area to feed. Several animals under protection, like the white sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), carey sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricada) and logerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), also frequent the area.
There are also devil rays (Manta birostris), several species of dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, Stenella attenuata, Stenella frontalis, Steno bredanesis, Grampus griseus), pseudos orcas (Pseudorca crassidens) and orcas (Orcinus orca). There are also other interesting fish like the amberjack (Seriola sp), tropical two-wing flying fish (Exocoetus volitans) and the Atlantic sail fish (Istiophorus sp).
